Two situations where you should quit

Blog title- Time to quitSo, how do you know if it’s time to quit?

Will your hard work eventually pay off?  Or are you on a path that’s doomed to fail?

How can you tell if you should keep going – or cut your losses?

A Plenty of Clients member asked me that on a recent coaching call.

Here’s what I think:

WHEN NOT TO QUIT:  When the going is tough…  that doesn’t mean it’s time to quit.  Just because it’s hard, just because things don’t work the first time, the second or the tenth, doesn’t mean you should quit.  Even though you’ll feel like it.

Sadly, this is precisely why most people quit.  The going gets tough, and most wrongly conclude, “It must be me,” and they quit.

Instead, learn from every setback, and adjust to make your next effort that much better.


However, there are times when it makes sense to quit.

 

WHEN TO QUIT # 1:  If you gain information that makes it clear a fundamental assumption you have is wrong.

For example, if you’re working really, really hard to get customers into your steak house…  and you find out one day that 90% of the local population are vegetarians.

That’s a good time to quit because a fundamental assumption turns out to be flawed.

Even then… you may only need to change your menu to have a thriving, profitable restaurant.  But if your goal is a STEAK HOUSE, you’re gonna have to go elsewhere.

 

WHEN TO QUIT # 2:  If you realize that you’ve been chasing a dream you don’t really want.

It’s hard to succeed when there’s a soft, muffled voice deep inside, saying “Stop!  You don’t even want this!”

And yet, so many people spend years or even decades pursuing something they don’t even want.

The moment you realize you’re chasing something you don’t want, it’s time to quit.  Take a step back. And pursue what you do want.
